. By Even she battled her English professors' propensities for drawing far reaching parallels from simple narratives, which tickled me. I don't typically read graphic novels, not because I dislike the genre or haven't read some brilliant graphic novels in the past.  18,00 €, 21,83 €  11,40 €, 28,98 € . . FUN HOME A FAMILY TRAGICOMIC is the latest work from the highly skilled, insightful, neurotic and wry-humored pen of Alison Bechdel, best known for her "Dykes to Watch Out For" comic strip. Through reading it I could feel her love of him, and because of this sympathy I found myself not wanting to remember his baser acts. This pattern builds to a climax until the final scene, which is one continuous and simple moment. Indeed, it's regrettable that this review can only include quotations and not excerpts of Bechdel's drawings. "Must" reading for Duke freshmen--and everyone else. (One of the longest-running queer comic strips, "Dykes to Watch Out For" is over 20 years old, has been syndicated in hundreds of papers, released in over 10 books, and is available online via the author's website.) Maybe you might even learn that people you once thought were evil are not. This breakout book by Alison Bechdel is a darkly funny family tale, pitch-perfectly illustrated with Bechdel's sweetly gothic drawings. I had been expecting some grand finale, and the solitary scene was not quite enough. And as tempting as it is to use that paragraph as a segue into a review of Fun Home, I can't figure out a way to do it that isn't monstrously cheesy, so I'll leave it where it stands. Bechdel spends the pages of this book examining all aspects of family through the lens of sexuality and her father's suicide. Well, I finally did read it and it's amazing. I love her exploration of how this particular place shaped her father and her family. It's an intriguing notion that has stuck with me ever since I first heard it and means even more now that I have a daughter, which has heightened my distaste for sexism. FUN HOME details the results of Bechdel's intellectual and emotional processing of her father's death, and her relationship with this complex, intelligent, conflicted, and often remote man. Maybe that’s a scary thought for some people and they would rather live in their insulated bubbles. It's very realistic...it must have been hard to write about her life. I didn’t realize that characters could be so defined in the graphic format. The intent is always to make print as compelling as the pictorials they are made to convey. As she says in the dedication (to her mother and brothers) " We did have a lot of fun, in spite of everything." --Chip Kidd, author of The Cheese Monkeys"One of the very best graphic novels ever." Bechdel picks at the relationship, worries it like a dog at a neighbor's welcome mat, piecing her father together from a tapestry of memories and journal entries, telling the story of the rest of her somewhat dysfunctional family (yes, only somewhat; no Augusten Burroughs or David Sedaris here, thankfully) in the process.  11,40 €, 11,14 € Those are the strengths of the book. Her new memoir, The Secret to Superman Strength, is forthcoming in 2021. |, 154.43 Fun Home is a beautiful book whose drawings aid the reader's imagination in fleshing out details of an early life that was deeply felt and well lived. She didn't propose that one medium explain the other: the graphics, composed with a brilliant eye for the emotional range of the characters in her life, primarily her father and herself, feed on the written narrative and our imagination, a task made tougher by the intimate subject matter that translated to the comic while stepping along the borders of pathos. Really good graphics! Fun Home is Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir of her life growing up. I went out and bought this book immediately after hearing a paper on it at a recent conference. She would rather have a brutally honest representation to show all her father’s flaws and all the love he received anyway. Within U.S.A. ISBN 10: 0224080512 Her declaration prompted her mother to point out to Bechdel that her father had been having affairs with men for years. I would read a chunk of it, put it down to do something else, but the next thing I knew I'd have it in my hands again. But Alison Bechdel has achieved a triumphant balance with startling fecundity in FUN HOME, her autobiography that's both an explanation of her coming of age and of her father's coming out, sort of. I'd like to read more from this author. Seller Inventory # 52YZZZ00BVKP_ns. x 228.85 To say that it is an accomplished work of art and memorable story is not to say that any of the members of Bechdel's family are warm and inviting; to the contrary, the often blisteringly candid tone with which she tells her story reveals that none of the Bechdels are easy to get along with (well, her brothers are very peripheral to this story, which leads me to suspect they were not all that interested in being talked about in their sister's story), including Bechdel. The story is not told chronologically, rather it jumps between scenes relevant to each chapter’s theme. Part of me wants to selfishly keep her as one of my own, somebody that I discovered before the mainstream and after I died, friends and family would find her books among my collection and think, "This is brilliant, if only we'd read her years ago!" Books and literature were an important influence in Bechdel's life growing up. The author has found peace with herself in regard to her father, her childhood, and who she is today. Astute, cheeky & enthralling, it brings together disparate themes like 'Wind in the Willows" & "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "Catcher in the Rye", as well as A Chorus Line & Joyce's Ulysses: pretty much a choose-your-own-literature type adventure.  18,00 €, 18,88 € Because life is not well known for its resolutions. I was familiar with the references she made, but I think it would be hard for someone who wasn't familiar with Fitzgerald, Joyce, and Proust to understand large chunks of the book. Don't miss it. . The novel is a testament to her father, and she leaves no part of him, or her own emotions about each part of their relationship, unexplored. Expected delivery to Italy in 8-12 business days. Softcover, Samuel..., 2015 In terms of content, Bechdel ably and appropriately includes themes from Proust, Joyce, Homer, and F.Scott Fitzgerald as she strip-mines the contorted relationship between her younger self and her English teacher father.
